Is College Worth It?

When it comes to the topic of college, most of us will readily agree that it provides skills we didn’t have before. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is questioning, “Is it worth it?”. Some are convinced it is, others believe college is ineffectual for their future. Most individuals want to go to college to help them professionally and succeed further in life. Although college can be beneficial to students who attend, there are countless people who don't really get anything out of college other than wasting their money, and end up dropping out.

College is a really poor investment for most people. A 4 year college could cost about $80,000-$160,000. As stated in, “7 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Go To College and 4 Things To Do Instead” by Michael Price, “Debt is the reason why millions of kids are moving back home after college. Their monthly student loan payments exceed the cost of housing and utilities if they were to live on their own.” Basically, Price is saying college is taking all of our money leading to most of college students dropping out or don't even end up getting the job they studied for and now they are unemployed living with their parents, which doesn't sound all that fun. Students think that because they graduate college, they are certainly getting their dream job they studied for. From careerbuilder.com, “51% of employed 2014 college grads are in jobs that don’t require a degree” and “53% of college grads are jobless.” More than half college graduates are unemployed because college doesn't teach them the skills they need to be prepared for any job.

College doesn't prepare us for the real world, Price claims “Fast forward to college graduation, kids get out of school, enter the real world and then expect that they’ve somehow earned the right to a job, but not just any old job, a high paying job with a great title, perks, benefits and bonuses.” Price does not deny that we’re used to people telling us that if we work hard for something then we’ll get it, when the truth is, it's not always like that. We would argue that for numerous people, college isn't worth it. There are many jobs that don't require a college degree, and can save people a lot of money to live on their own rather than relying on their parents after college.
