Senioritis? What is it?

Senioritis. If you type this word into Google, what you’ll receive is a humorous noun defined as “A supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance.” This disastrous illness will be especially prominent during the last few months of school, and will 100% be affecting the student during the last few weeks of school. The symptoms of Senioritis include lack of attendance, distaste of school, decline in grades, and just the overall attitude of being “done” with high school. All jokes aside, many seniors self diagnose themselves with the joking. Many seniors seem to come to this point very early into their senior year, some even make the joke that they’ve had this joking sickness since their freshman, sophomore, and even junior year. While some students find this funny, others only see it as an annoying excuse for their peers to miss school. The only true concern in “Senioritis” to the school is the lack of attendance and decline in grades. So the real question comes to light, does the nonchalant use of this “funny” term negatively impact students? Giving students somewhat of an excuse as to why it’s “okay” they’re missing as much school as they are as the end of the school year approaches.
