Why Are There So Few Leaders

Wherever I am, I always find a way to involve myself in what is happening. If I am doing a group project, I organize it and create a plan of attack. If I am in a class where a leadership position is needed, I am one of the first to step up. When attending an event and someone needs help with something, I am there to offer my services. For me, this is the way of life. Jumping right into everything and constantly adding my own opinion or finding some way to be involved. It is natural for me to assume a leadership role, even when I don’t know much about the subject. I pick things up quickly and enjoy managing things. I feel that our right to free speech is something that we should exercise. Also, everything is more enjoyable if you make it and setting up for a dance is way more fun than sitting there and watching it get done.
This is why it is hard for me to understand when others choose not to participate. If there were a vote, even if I wasn’t particularly interested, I would vote anyways because they asked for my thoughts. When others are actively intrigued by what another has to say, say it. It goes even further then opting out of voting for the next school dance’s theme or for class favorites in a yearbook, many decide to stay to themselves each and every day. Each day they show up to school physically but not mentally, they exist from 7:45 to 2:15, and then no one knows where they go. However, there are few of us who are constantly at school and nearly have our own bed here.
Grandview High School continues to be better by each effort us students put in. It may be planting flowers, painting the sidewalk, or choosing to help the community by collecting cans of food or clothes. But we can’t do it alone. Those in leadership classes are also the same people who are in a club, sport, or both. These students exhaust themselves keeping the school up to par. They are also at other student’s games for moral support.
It makes me curious what others choose to do with their time. Do they sit at home and stare at a wall? While high schoolers love sleep, there is only so much sleeping we can do. Having a job is very rarely the excuse because others juggle sports and employment all the time.
Do they choose to be involved in out of school activities such as a church group or maybe even a band? Where do they go?
But most importantly, why do they not consider themselves a part of Grandview High School and want to be an active member in this school? Is it because they don’t have the speaking skills and are scared to share their thoughts, or do they just not care? Grandview High School needs to create something where we include all of these people. Whether it be thanking them for being here, or inviting them to join us in a project, it needs to happen. We need to train others to be leaders because the few of us can’t do everything by ourselves. The more students we have who are willing to step up and make Grandview a better community to live in, the better. Perhaps we can create a week filled with events that help those people gain confidence and become more involved just like our other spirit weeks. While that may only last a week, we will have a newfound leader for a lifetime.
